As family members and stakeholders, our initial discussions centered around devising effective ways to engage with adult individuals receiving services. We began by examining existing models within traditional frameworks, aiming to understand their strengths and limitations. It became apparent that empowering self-directed participants with choices and options was crucial for their advancement. With this principle firmly established, we explored programs from other states, all promising impressive outcomes on paper. However, our collective focus shifted towards finding a program that prioritized individual empowerment and accessibility.
The SNAP (Specific Natural Activity Program) program, crafted by John Meyers, emerged as an exemplary choice. Its simplicity and practicality resonated with us, as it was designed with a deep understanding of the experiences of adults with intellectual disabilities. Moreover, its packaging and accessibility made it suitable for parents, educators, administrators, and direct support personnel alike. Our decision to adopt the SNAP program was rooted in our belief that true success lies in community involvement and support, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
